Weekend Originals - Artist Features presented by size? and adidas
Weekend Originals

'Weekend Originals' is a three-day in-store event, showcasing local talent whose practice is actively shaping and advancing Toronto’s contemporary art scene. Each weekend, @sizetoronto will highlight one of three commissioned artists, each presenting Original work that reflects their distinctive visual language while reimagining the 3 Stripes.

Inspired by the adidas Originals ethos, we invited three artists to envision the future of adidas Originals through their unique artistic lens, tasked with taking the iconic adidas trefoil blending past influences into bold visions of what’s next.

Esther Liang

The first artist in our Weekend Originals lineup is multidisciplinary artist—Esther Liang. Liang is a surrealist based between Vancouver and Toronto, working primarily in oil, acrylic, and hand-painted multisurface media. Delving into the realms of dreams and psychology, her work often blurs the boundary between the conscious and the subconscious to reflect on the complexities of identity and emotional experience.

Liang’s approach to art embraces the freedom of discovery allowing play and intuition to guide her creative process. Her surreal use of imagery transforms intangible ideas into striking visual narratives, challenging the viewer's perception while inviting empathy and introspection.

Beyond her individual practice, Liang is deeply engaged in community-building and creative empowerment. She is the founder of @arteurcollective, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and uplifting Asian creatives. Through these initiatives, she fosters spaces of collaboration, representation, and artistic growth. Liang holds a BFA from OCAD University and is one of four artisan painters for Louis Vuitton Canada. Her hand-painted work has been featured in collaborative projects including Paris Fashion Week (2022) and a high-profile cultural activation with The Weeknd.

Her approach to creation as an act of play and introspection stands as both personal exploration, and collective dialogue. The Bengali-Canadian artist investigates the complex threshold between the iconic and the anonymous, reimagining cultural figures through a visual language that balances celebration and critique, human intimacy and symbolic detachment.

Each composition is informed by the subject’s upbringing, creative influence, and emotional resonance. Through the use of floral and geometric motifs, Chroma embeds his art with a critical awareness of intellectual property and the politics of image rights. This deliberate abstraction underscores a central tension within his work: the divide between the individual as a person and the individual as an image. Navigating the contested space between an artist’s right to expression and a celebrity’s right to publicity, Chroma’s recurring motifs act as symbolic shields, protective yet delicate, reflecting the ongoing power struggle between independent creators and corporate media systems that commodify identity and image.
