Submerged in culture, our collaborations with adidas Originals know no bounds. This time we’ve pulled from the time capsule, and revamped the Archive Joggen in all its glory — clashing back and forth between its runner’s appeal and influential impact.
The story goes back to 1983 when the Joggen first made its popular debut at the London Marathon. Unusual as it was surprising, Joe Strummer — the frontman of popular UK punk rock band The Clash — was seen sporting the Joggens as a participant in the race. This candid moment captured for all to see soon became an integral component in both Strummer’s reputation and the popularity of the Joggens as a running staple. Bridging a gap between the grungy British punk rock wave of that era and the athletic arena, Strummer’s ideals meant not being one to follow the grain of the expected path, fusing his gritty on-stage persona and past childhood cross-country experience into the way he lived.
"As I was about to leave, I [saw] Joe trundling along with his bandy legs and adidas shoes. I got my camera out, shot a few frames and that's it."
Now, four decades removed from its inception at the 1983 London Marathon, we’ve reimagined the classic Joggen runner Joe Strummer wore that day as our latest size? Exclusive. Tapping into that aspiring moment, this pair boasts choice design elements that harken back to Strummer’s iconic outfit captured on film (like its immersive white and orange tumbled leather upper and serrated gum rubber outsole).
And while this low-profile sneaker may not be made for the tracks anymore, thanks to its athleisure-focused construction and streamlined silhouette, it's still perfectly designed to elevate any fit. Plus, gold foil Joggen branding adorns the sidewalls, while the tongue tab includes a key detail in the form of a “D918 '' graphic — a nod to Joe Strummer’s marathon racing bib. Beyond Strummer’s passing, his integral influence still lives within his musical and cultural legacy, and thus each step you take sporting the Archive Joggens carries that momentum too.
